Words can motivate individuals to take action. In culinary sector, distinct ethnic verbal branding is one of the techniques to identify a restaurant brand. Specific phrases or words are selected to establish a powerful brand. This study aims to analyze the language selection for verbal branding and ethnicity representation in restaurants that use ethnic brands in Pekanbaru, one of the metropolis cities with the largest economic activities in Sumatera Island. Six restaurants were selected for their popular atmosphere, service, and cuisines authenticity specific to ethnic brand. This qualitative research was conducted from the perspective of cultural studies using an ethnolinguistic approach to collect data from three-month observations and interviews with the owners of purposively-selected restaurant to help understand the phenomenon. The results indicated that, lexically, the names of the restaurants contained ethnic words directly associated with certain ethnicities and are chosen to create a memorable brand. The analysis of associative meaning reveals that the restaurant brand represents an ethnicity with its uniqueness to produce strong branding which attracts customers. The combined lexical and associative meaning shows that restaurant branding represents not only the restaurant owners’ place of origin or ethnicity but also the authentic menus that define their culinary business. Research implications suggest the effectiveness of incorporating local words and ethnic representation in the restaurants’ names to bring in economic benefits and international branding.

The Ministry of Education and Culture encourages education units and educators to learn and share with each other through a learning community supported by the Merdeka Teaching Platform (PMM). In implementing the independent curriculum, teachers need new competencies and understanding in implementing this curriculum. It is necessary to have a community or groups consisting of educators to exchange inspiration and ideas in learning. This research aims to analyse the application of group behaviour in improving learning communities in Bukittinggi City. The method used in this research is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The results showed that the learning community as one of the competency improvement strategies for educators, in its implementation was carried out in a scheduled and unscheduled manner. Activities in learning communities are carried out by identifying learning needs or problems being faced, sharing problems and developing processes to find solutions. Learning communities provide a space for educators to communicate and share information, contextual issues, personal experiences that can build understanding and insight related to learning. After the implementation of learning community activities, there is still a need for regular feedback and evaluation of the learning community.

Dalam masyarakat multikultural orang-orang yang memiliki latar belakang berbeda berkomunikasi. Komunikasi bisa gagal bila menimbulkan kesalahpahaman atau konflik. Kesalahpahaman bisa terjadi karena perbedaan budaya yang terdapat dalam masyarakat multikultural. Tulisan ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan hubungan antara komunikasi dan budaya serta menjelaskan penerapan komunikasi antarbudaya dalam masyarakat multikultural. Setelah membahas konsep komunikasi dan budaya, ditemukan bahwa komunikasi dan budaya tidak dapat dipisahkan karena budaya merupakan dasar dari komunikasi. Komunikasi antarbudaya sangat diperlukan dalam interaksi orang-orang yang berada dalam masyarakat multikultural karena komunikasi antarbudaya berlandaskan pengakuan terhadap pluralisme seperti yang terkandung dalam multikulturalisme.

This writing aims to describe basic principle of intercultural communication and relates it with intercultural communicative process applied by Indonesian and Malaysian communities. This writing concludes that the application of intercultural communication needs to be conducted in Indonesia and Malaysia relation since the different relation of nations needs certain strategies to behave to keep mutual comprehensions between the two nations. Syair is one of literary works which is well known in Malay society. One of syair exists in this age is Syair Nasib Melayu written by Riau culturalist, Tenas Effendy. This research aims to analyze the first pait of the syair. It tells us the early development of Malay, from Malay Kingdom in Bintan until this modem age. From the stages of Malay development presented in this syair, it can be concluded that Malay people starts from glory toward decline. Malay tuah (prestige) seems to be declined because Malay people are powerless to compete with other people.
